Ashiq and Mugham Music of Azerbaijan in the UK
Gochaq Askarov, the great star of Womad 09, shines again this November accompanied by a constellation of great musicians from Azerbaijan.
The Asian Music Circuit is delighted to tour ashiq and mugham music from Azerbaijan from November 7 to 13, 2009 in Brighton, York, Gateshead, London and St.Ives.
Audiences who attended Womad last summer, will be delighted to hear that Gochaq Askarov is back in the UK for more concerts. Gochaq is a mugham singer, a traditional musical art form from Azerbaijan that refers both to a melodic style and to a genre of traditional music. Vocal-instrumental mugham compositions are often performed by ensemble of three musicians: Gochaq will be accompanied on tar (long-necked lute) by Malik Mansurov and on kamancha (spike-fiddle) by Elrun Mikailov.
To offer UK audiences a further taste of what Azerbaijan music has to offer, the Asian Music Circuit has in addition invited four brilliant representatives of the ashiq music style: Ramin Qarayev; Azer Maharramov; Qalandar Zeynalov and Aytekin Akbarova. An ashiq is a poet, composer, singer, musical performer and occasionally dancer who beats on the strings of the saz and improvises serenades and ballads.
This tour will leave you wanting for more music from Azerbaijan!
